What you pay to register a vehicle in Ohio depends on what kind of vehicle it is. A motorcycle, a passenger car, an RV, a utility trailer, and a one-ton work truck each carry a different base registration fee, and electric and hybrid owners pay an added fuel-type fee on top. This is a plain-language reference to Ohio vehicle registration fees by type for 2026: the base fee for each vehicle class, the extra charges that stack on top, and a worked example so you can estimate your total before you visit.

Because the legislature can adjust these amounts, several rose in 2026 under House Bill 96, treat the official Ohio BMV fee page as the final word. Verify current fees on bmv.ohio.gov before you pay.

How an Ohio registration total is built

No matter the vehicle, your bill stacks the same way:

  1. Base state registration fee, set by vehicle type (the tables below).
  2. Deputy registrar service fee, $8.00 for one year, scaling for multi-year terms.
  3. Local permissive tax, a county/municipal tax in $5.00 increments, capped at $30.00 per vehicle, varying by where you live.
  4. Fuel-type fee, added for EVs/hybrids only (see below).
  5. Mailing/late fees, if applicable.

So your total = base fee + deputy registrar fee + permissive tax (+ fuel-type fee). The base fee is the part that changes by vehicle class.

Base registration fees by vehicle type

Annual state registration fees (these do not include the deputy registrar fee or permissive tax):

Vehicle typeAnnual base fee
Passenger car$36.00
Motorcycle$30.00
Motor home / RV$51.00
Light non-commercial truck (up to ¾ ton)$51.00
Heavy non-commercial truck (¾–1 ton)$86.00
House vehicle$26.00
Moped / motorized bicycle$26.00
Commercial trailer (non-permanent registration)$41.00
Non-commercial / utility trailerBy weight class (see below)
Commercial truck / busBy declared gross vehicle weight
Farm truck / farm busBy weight class (reduced farm rates)

Fees and figures change. Verify current amounts on bmv.ohio.gov before your visit.

These are base figures. Your out-the-door cost adds the deputy registrar fee and your local permissive tax, and EV/hybrid vehicles add a fuel-type fee.

EV and hybrid fuel-type fee

Ohio charges an annual fuel-type fee on top of registration for electrified vehicles, because they pay little or no gas tax:

Fuel typeAdded annual fee
Plug-in electric (EV)$200.00
Plug-in hybrid$150.00
Hybrid$100.00
Gas / diesel$0.00

Fees and figures change. Verify current amounts on bmv.ohio.gov before your visit.

This is a flat add-on to the base registration fee for the vehicle’s class. If the BMV has your fuel type wrong, you can correct it with a fuel-type affidavit or dispute form (BMV 4740 / 4741), see Ohio BMV forms explained.

Trailers and RVs

Recreational and towed vehicles are a common source of confusion:

  • Travel trailers and utility/non-commercial trailers are registered by weight class, with smaller, lighter trailers costing less. Some can be registered for multiple years at once.
  • Commercial trailers can carry a non-permanent annual fee (about $41.00) or, in some cases, a permanent registration option for qualifying trailers.
  • Motor homes / RVs register at a $51.00 base fee (plus the usual add-ons). A vehicle converted to a motor home may need an affidavit (BMV 3804) at the title stage.

Because trailer weight tiers vary, confirm your exact class on bmv.ohio.gov.

Commercial vehicles (by gross vehicle weight)

Commercial trucks and buses don’t use a flat fee, they’re registered by declared gross vehicle weight (GVW). The heavier the rated weight, the higher the fee, and apportioned/interstate operations follow separate IRP rules. If you run a work truck above the non-commercial thresholds, plan to declare your weight and expect a weight-based fee well above the passenger rate. A deputy registrar can quote your bracket, and commercial and fleet operators may also work with licensed dealers and title services.

The add-ons, in detail

Deputy registrar service fee (by term)

TermDR fee
1 year$8.00
2 years$12.00
3 years$16.00
4 years$20.00
5 years$24.00

Fees and figures change. Verify current amounts on bmv.ohio.gov before your visit.

Registering for multiple years (where the vehicle class allows it) lowers the per-year service cost and saves trips.

Local permissive tax

A $0–$30.00 county/municipal tax, in $5.00 increments, set by your taxing district and prorated 50% for registrations of seven months or less. Two addresses in the same county can owe different permissive tax, so your neighbor’s total may not match yours.

Late fee

A $10.00 late fee applies to certain registrations renewed more than 30 days after expiration, on top of the regular fees.

Worked example: total cost by vehicle type

Estimated one-year totals (base + $8.00 DR fee + an assumed $20.00 permissive tax; your permissive tax will vary):

VehicleBase+ DR fee+ permissive (est.)+ fuel-typeEst. total
Passenger (gas)$36.00$8.00$20.00$0.00~$64.00
Passenger (hybrid)$36.00$8.00$20.00$100.00~$164.00
Passenger (EV)$36.00$8.00$20.00$200.00~$264.00
Motorcycle$30.00$8.00$20.00$0.00~$58.00
Motor home / RV$51.00$8.00$20.00$0.00~$79.00
Light truck (¾ ton)$51.00$8.00$20.00$0.00~$79.00
Heavy truck (1 ton)$86.00$8.00$20.00$0.00~$114.00

Fees and figures change. Verify current amounts on bmv.ohio.gov before your visit.

These are estimates for illustration, your permissive tax, term, and any mailing/late fees change the total. Verify on bmv.ohio.gov.

What to bring to register or renew

  • Your title (for first registration of a vehicle) or renewal notice / plate number (for a renewal)
  • Your driver license or state ID
  • Proof of insurance, if requested
  • Payment for the full total above

Newly purchased? Title first at the Clerk of Courts, then register at the BMV, see BMV vs. Clerk of Courts in Ohio. Full checklist: What to bring to the BMV in Ohio.

What causes return trips

  • Budgeting only the base fee. The deputy registrar fee and permissive tax always stack on top.
  • Forgetting the EV/hybrid fuel-type fee. It can more than triple a passenger total.
  • Assuming a work truck registers like a car. Heavy and commercial vehicles are weight-based and cost more.
  • Misjudging trailer class. Trailers are weight-tiered; confirm your bracket.
  • Letting registration lapse. A $10.00 late fee, and a possible citation, beats the savings of putting it off.

Common questions

How much is it to register a passenger car in Ohio? The base fee is $36.00 per year, plus an $8.00 one-year deputy registrar fee and your local permissive tax (up to $30.00), roughly $44–$74 total for a gas car, depending on your district.

Why do EVs and hybrids cost more to register? Ohio adds an annual fuel-type fee, $200 EV, $150 plug-in hybrid, $100 hybrid, to offset the gas tax these vehicles pay little or none of.

How much is motorcycle registration in Ohio? The base motorcycle fee is $30.00 per year, plus the deputy registrar fee and permissive tax.

What does it cost to register an RV or motor home? A motor home’s base fee is $51.00 per year, plus the standard add-ons.

How are commercial trucks charged? By declared gross vehicle weight, the heavier the rating, the higher the fee. A deputy registrar can quote your weight bracket.

Can I register a trailer for more than one year? Many trailers can be registered for multiple years (and some commercial trailers have a permanent option). Fees are based on weight class.

Are these 2026 fees final? Fees can change by legislation. Always verify current fees on bmv.ohio.gov before paying.
