This is a plain-language reference to Ohio BMV fees for the transactions handled through deputy registrar offices: vehicle registration, license plates, driver license and state ID, REAL ID, VIN inspections, and disability placards. Ohio sets these fees statewide, and several changed at the start of 2026, most notably the annual passenger registration fee, which rose to $36.00.

DMVQ is an independent informational resource and is not affiliated with the Ohio BMV or any government agency. Because fees can change and your total depends on local taxes and your specific vehicle, confirm current fees on bmv.ohio.gov before you visit. The figures below reflect the Ohio BMV fee schedule as last updated in early 2026.

How an Ohio registration bill is built

When you renew a passenger vehicle, your total is not a single number. It is three parts stacked together:

  1. State registration fee, set by vehicle type (passenger = $36.00/year).
  2. Deputy registrar service fee, the per-transaction fee for in-person service ($8.00 for a one-year renewal).
  3. Local permissive tax, a county/municipal tax that varies by your taxing district. It is assessed in $5.00 increments and cannot exceed $30.00 per vehicle (it can be prorated by 50% for registrations of 7 months or less).

So a one-year passenger renewal is roughly $36.00 + $8.00 + your local permissive tax, plus any fuel-type fee (see EV/hybrid below) and any mailing fee. Your exact permissive tax depends on where you live in Ohio.

EV and hybrid owners: Ohio adds an annual fuel-type fee on top of registration, $200 electric, $150 plug-in hybrid, $100 hybrid, and $0 for gas/diesel.

No-fee exceptions: The Ohio BMV schedule lists driver license fees as free for 100% documented disabled veterans. It also lists state ID new, renewal, and duplicate transactions as free for applicants who are 17 or older or permanently disabled.

REAL ID costs the same as a standard card, so there is no surcharge for choosing the compliant version. See REAL ID in Ohio and Driver license & ID renewal.

Title fees, paid at the County Clerk of Courts

Titles are not a BMV fee, because the BMV does not issue titles in Ohio. The County Clerk of Courts does. For reference:

  • Title fee: $18.00 statewide (some counties charge $23.00 if local officials approve an additional charge).

You pay the title fee at the Clerk of Courts title office, then pay your registration fees at a deputy registrar. Check with your local Clerk of Courts to confirm the amount. See Title transfer and BMV vs. Clerk of Courts in Ohio.

Payment methods

Bring an accepted payment method for your total. Deputy registrar agencies commonly accept cash, check, money order, and debit/credit cards where allowed. Card payments may include a separate processing fee, so ask before you pay if you want to avoid card charges.

Why fees changed in 2026

Ohio’s 2026 fee adjustments came out of state budget legislation (House Bill 96), with the increase in the passenger registration fee directed toward the Ohio State Highway Patrol and traffic-law enforcement. That is why the annual passenger registration fee moved up to $36.00. Whenever you read a fee online, here or anywhere, treat the Ohio BMV fee page as the final word, since the legislature can adjust amounts.

Common questions

How much is it to renew my plates in Ohio? For a passenger vehicle, roughly $36.00 (state registration) + $8.00 (deputy registrar fee for one year) + your local permissive tax (up to $30.00), plus any fuel-type fee for EV/hybrid vehicles. Your exact total depends on your taxing district.

What is the deputy registrar fee? It is the per-transaction service fee for in-person processing, $8.00 for a one-year registration renewal, scaling up for multi-year renewals.

Does DMVQ charge for titles? DMVQ is an informational site, not a government office, and does not process transactions. Titles are handled and charged by the County Clerk of Courts, not the BMV. The standard Ohio title fee is $18.00 ($23.00 in some counties).

Is there an extra charge for a REAL ID? No. A REAL ID (compliant) card costs the same as a standard card.

Why did my registration cost more in 2026? Ohio raised the annual passenger registration fee to $36.00 effective in 2026 under state budget legislation, with revenue directed to the State Highway Patrol.

Are these fees guaranteed to be current? Fees change. DMVQ keeps this page updated, but always verify current fees on bmv.ohio.gov before your visit.
