- Where this information comes from
Ohio offers more than 200 specialty license plates, collegiate plates for your alma mater, military and veteran plates that honor your service, professional sports teams, charities, and special-interest organizations. This page is your overview of how Ohio specialty plates work: the plate families, what they cost, who qualifies, how to order, and what to bring so you get it right the first time.
A quick orientation first. License plates and vehicle registration are handled by BMV offices (deputy registrars). Your vehicle title is a separate document issued by the County Clerk of Courts, and you do not need a new title to switch to a specialty plate. If you already own your vehicle and your registration is current, ordering a specialty, collegiate, or military plate is its own straightforward transaction. DMVQ is an independent informational resource and does not process transactions.
The three families of specialty plates
Every Ohio specialty plate falls into one of three broad groups. Knowing which group yours is in tells you what it costs and what you’ll need to bring.
- Specialty / organizational plates, Designs tied to a charity, cause, profession, club, or special-interest organization. Many carry an annual fee, and a portion of some fees is forwarded to the sponsoring organization or scholarship fund.
- Collegiate & professional sports plates, Show your university or favorite Ohio pro team. These carry a flat annual fee, part of which typically supports a scholarship fund at the chosen school.
- Military & veteran plates, Honor a branch of service, combat decoration, or veteran status. These generally carry no additional annual plate fee, but they require proof of eligibility.
You can also personalize many specialty plates, choosing your own letters and numbers, for an added annual fee, and you can keep your current plate number when you switch designs for a one-time retention fee.

Specialty designs and fees change. Confirm the current plate and its exact fee on bmv.ohio.gov or with BMV staff before ordering.
Collegiate & professional sports plates
If you want to show your school or team, a collegiate or pro-sports plate is a $35.00 annual add-on. A portion of that fee usually funds a scholarship at the university you choose. Ohio offers plates for in-state schools (Ohio State, Ohio, Kent State, and many more), out-of-state universities, and Ohio’s professional sports franchises. You can personalize most of these designs for the additional $50.00 personalization fee.
Military & veteran plates
Ohio has one of the broadest military and veteran plate programs in the country, plates for each branch of service, combat-award recipients, Purple Heart and Pearl Harbor veterans, Gold Star families, former POWs, and general veteran status, among others. The key advantages:
- No additional annual plate fee for most military and veteran plates.
- Proof of eligibility is required, commonly a DD-214, military ID, or other documentation specific to the plate.
Because eligibility documents need to be reviewed, military and veteran plates are best handled in person at a BMV office, where staff can review your paperwork and explain the ordering process. See the Military & Veterans services page for the full list of benefits.
Organizational & special-interest plates
These are the largest group, hundreds of designs for charities, causes, professions, alumni groups, clubs, and civic organizations. Fees range from $0 to $50 annually depending on the design, and many forward a contribution to the sponsoring organization. Some organizational plates require a certificate or authorization form from the sponsoring group before the BMV can issue them, so check the plate’s requirements first.
Personalized (vanity) specialty plates
You can personalize most specialty plates, choosing your own combination of letters and numbers (subject to availability and approval). Personalization adds a $50.00 annual fee on top of any plate fee. Ohio rejects combinations that are duplicative or deemed offensive, so check availability before you order using the BMV’s online specialized-plates tool.
What to bring (checklist)
- Photo ID (Ohio driver license or state ID)
- Your current registration and license plate number
- Proof of Ohio auto insurance
- Last four digits of the primary owner’s Social Security number
- Eligibility documentation for military/veteran plates (e.g., DD-214) or organizational plates (sponsor authorization)
- For personalized plates: your desired combination plus a backup or two
- Payment for the annual plate fee and any transaction fees
- The completed Request for Specialty License Plates (BMV 4705). BMV staff can help, or download it ahead of time
How to order: step by step
- Pick your plate. Browse designs and check personalized-character availability on the BMV’s online specialized-plates tool.
- Check eligibility. Military, veteran, and some organizational plates require documentation, gather it first.
- Decide on your number. Keeping your existing plate number when you switch designs adds a one-time $10.00 retention fee.
- Visit a BMV office (or order eligible plates online, see below).
- Complete BMV 4705 and present your ID, insurance, and any eligibility documents.
- Pay the annual plate fee plus any transaction and registration fees.
- Receive your plates. Specialty and personalized plates are usually manufactured and mailed, so allow a few weeks.
Online options
Many specialty and personalized plates can be ordered online through Ohio’s official OPLATES service, which also lets you check whether a personalized combination is available before you commit. Online ordering is convenient, but plates are mailed, so plan ahead if your current registration is close to expiring. Order in person at a BMV office when you need to submit eligibility documents (military, veteran, organizational), want to keep your existing number, or prefer help choosing the right plate.
Explore plates by name
We maintain individual pages for Ohio’s most-requested specialty plates, with each plate’s fee, eligibility rules, and exact ordering steps. Looking for a specific design (a university, a branch of service, a charity)? Start with the plate’s own page, then bring your details to a BMV office.
What causes return trips
- Forgetting the fee recurs. Specialty and personalized plate fees are billed every year at renewal, budget for them beyond the first order.
- Skipping eligibility documents. Without a DD-214 or sponsor authorization, the BMV office cannot issue an eligibility-based plate.
- Assuming your vanity combo is available. Check first; duplicates and offensive combinations are rejected.
- Expecting same-day plates. Specialty and personalized plates are usually mailed.
- Overlooking the retention fee. Keeping your current number when switching designs costs an extra $10.00.
- Confusing plates with your title. Ordering plates never changes your title. Titles come from the County Clerk of Courts.
