Studying for your Ohio permit test? Keep the two steps separate: take the Ohio BMV knowledge test through the state testing path, then visit a deputy registrar for the temporary permit (TIPIC) once you’ve passed and have the right documents.
DMVQ is an independent informational resource and is not affiliated with the Ohio BMV or any government agency.
Important routing note. Not all deputy registrars administer the knowledge test on-site. You can take the test online or at a state driver exam station, then visit a deputy registrar for permit issuance once you have passed and have the right documents.
What the knowledge test is
The knowledge test is the written exam that proves you understand Ohio traffic laws, road signs, and safe-driving rules. It’s the first hurdle on the way to a temporary permit. It is 40 multiple-choice questions, and you must answer 75% correctly to pass. Questions cover signs, signals, right-of-way, speed and following rules, and safe-driving practices, all drawn from the Ohio Driver Manual (Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws).
Pass the knowledge test and a vision screening, and you’re issued a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC), your “temps.” That permit is what lets a new driver practice before the road test.
Who needs it
- New teen drivers (you can apply for temps at 15 years, 6 months).
- Adults getting a first Ohio license.
- Motorcycle applicants, who take a separate motorcycle knowledge test.
If you’re a new Ohio resident with a current out-of-state license, you generally do not retake the knowledge test. You transfer your license with a vision screening instead. See new Ohio resident.
Where you can take the knowledge test
Ohio gives you more than one path. Here’s how to think about it:
| Option | Where | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Online | Ohio BMV Online Services (OHID account) | Convenient; follow the current proctoring, ID, and result-transmission rules in the official state system |
| Driver exam station | State driver exam stations | Always administer testing; find the nearest on bmv.ohio.gov’s locator |
| Participating deputy registrar | Select deputy registrar agencies | Not all agencies test on-site, so confirm before your visit |
The safe plan: if you can take the test online, do that and then visit a deputy registrar with proof to get your TIPIC issued. If you prefer in person, use the state locator or scheduling system for a testing location, then visit a deputy registrar for issuance.
How to study and pass
- Read the Ohio Driver Manual cover to cover. It’s free on bmv.ohio.gov and every test question comes from it.
- Focus on signs and right-of-way, the two areas that trip people up most.
- Take practice tests to get used to the 40-question, 75%-to-pass format.
- Know the failing consequence: if you don’t pass, you’ll need to come back and retake it. Prepare rather than wing it.
What to bring (for the permit)
To be issued your TIPIC after passing, bring originals or certified copies:
- Proof of full legal name, date of birth, and legal presence (certified U.S. birth certificate or U.S. passport)
- Proof of Social Security number (Social Security card, W-2, or 1099)
- Two proofs of Ohio residency from different sources
- Proof of any legal name change, if applicable
- If under 18: a parent or legal guardian present to sign, with their own valid ID
- Proof you passed the knowledge test (if taken online/elsewhere) and your vision screening
- Payment for the permit fee
See the full what to bring to the BMV guide.

Hours & location
Find your nearest deputy registrar and confirm hours before you go. Remember that the knowledge test may not be available at every location, so confirm testing availability or take the test online first.
For directions, parking, and a map, see hours, location & directions.
What causes return trips
- Assuming every deputy registrar gives the test. Not all administer the knowledge test on-site. Confirm first or take it online / at a driver exam station.
- Skipping the manual. Every question comes from the Ohio Driver Manual. Reading it is the difference between passing and a repeat trip.
- Coming without a parent (under 18). A parent or guardian must be present to sign for the permit.
- Forgetting the second proof of address. You need two, from different sources.
- Confusing the knowledge test with the road test. The knowledge test is written; the road/skills test is separate and given at a state exam station. See driving skills test.
Common questions
Does DMVQ give the knowledge test? DMVQ is an informational site, not a testing center. In Ohio the knowledge test can be taken online or in person at participating deputy registrars and driver exam stations. Whether you test online or elsewhere, a deputy registrar can issue your TIPIC once you’ve passed and brought your documents.
How many questions are on the Ohio knowledge test, and what’s the passing score? Forty multiple-choice questions; you must get 75% (32 of 40) correct to pass.
Can I take the Ohio knowledge test online? Yes, Ohio offers an online knowledge test through BMV Online Services with an OHID account. Follow the current proctoring and ID requirements in the official state system.
What do I need to study? The Ohio Driver Manual (Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws), free on bmv.ohio.gov. Every question comes from it.
What happens after I pass? You bring proof of passing and your documents to a deputy registrar, complete a vision screening, and get your TIPIC (temps). Then you begin supervised practice toward the road test.
Is the knowledge test the same as the driving test? No. The knowledge test is the written exam. The driving (skills) test, which covers maneuverability and road driving, is separate and administered at a state driver exam station. See driving skills test.
