Ohio license reinstatement fees are the dollar amounts the BMV charges to restore driving privileges after a suspension, and they vary widely by the type of suspension you have. This page lays out the common fee ranges, explains the amnesty program that can reduce or waive eligible older debt, and details the $25-a-month payment plan. You can pay these fees at a BMV deputy registrar, online, or by mail.
DMVQ is an independent informational resource and is not affiliated with the Ohio BMV or any government agency. We don’t process transactions or payments.
Remember: paying the fee only clears the BMV’s side. The cause of each suspension must already be satisfied with the court, CSEA, or your insurer. For that routing, see the license reinstatement page.
Fees and amnesty phases change. Confirm current amounts and your specific requirements on bmv.ohio.gov or in your reinstatement requirements letter before paying.
How reinstatement fees work
A reinstatement fee is tied to each individual suspension on your record, not to your license as a whole. If you have more than one suspension, you owe a fee for each, and all must be paid (and their causes cleared) before you can drive legally.
Two costs are separate from the reinstatement fee itself:
- Deputy registrar service fee: $10 is added each time you make a reinstatement payment in person at a deputy registrar.
- The license credential: if your license expired during the suspension, renewing or reissuing it is a separate transaction with its own fee.
Common reinstatement fee amounts
The table below reflects the Ohio BMV reinstatement fee schedule shown on its official Documents & Fees page, last updated by the BMV on 4/30/2025. Amounts can still depend on the date a suspension was added to your record or the conviction date, so confirm your exact amount against your requirements letter and the BMV’s online reinstatement system before paying.
| Suspension type | Reinstatement fee |
|---|---|
| ALS, added to record on or after April 9, 2025 | $315.00 |
| OVI / Physical Control suspension, conviction date on or after April 9, 2025 | $315.00 |
| License / bond forfeiture | $25.00 |
| Warrant block BMV fee | $15.00 |
| Child support | $25.00 |
| Non-Resident Violator Compact suspension | $30.00 |
| Vehicle immobilization | $100.00 |
| Non-compliance / no-insurance, first offense | $40.00 |
| Non-compliance / no-insurance, second offense within 1 year | $300.00 |
| Non-compliance / no-insurance, third offense within 1 year | $600.00 |
| Listed 89-day-or-longer or indefinite suspensions | $40.00 |

Notes that trip people up:
- OVI/ALS dates matter. The BMV’s current schedule lists $315.00 for ALS records added on or after April 9, 2025 and OVI / Physical Control suspensions with conviction dates on or after April 9, 2025. If your suspension is older, use your requirements letter or the BMV payment portal for the exact amount.
- Multiple suspensions stack. A record can have more than one reinstatement fee, and each suspension must be cleared.
- Insurance non-compliance escalates. The current BMV schedule lists $40.00 for a first offense, $300.00 for a second offense within one year, and $600.00 for a third offense within one year.
The Reinstatement Fee Amnesty Program
Ohio runs a permanent Reinstatement Fee Debt Reduction and Amnesty Program (in place since December 13, 2020) that can reduce or waive eligible reinstatement-fee debt for certain suspensions. Key points:
- It applies to specific, eligible suspensions, typically older debt and certain qualifying violation types, defined in program phases by offense date.
- It generally does not cover the most serious suspensions (for example, current OVI-related reinstatement fees may be excluded).
- If you qualify and still have a remaining balance after the reduction, you’re placed on a payment plan of at least $25 every 30 days.
- Indigent applicants may qualify for a full waiver of eligible fees under the program’s hardship provisions.
Because eligibility is rule-driven and case-specific, check your specific eligibility on bmv.ohio.gov or through a legal-aid resource.
The fee installment (payment) plan
If you can’t pay everything at once, Ohio’s reinstatement fee payment plan spreads it out:
- Eligibility: you owe at least $150 in reinstatement fees and you’ve met all your other requirements (proof of insurance, any required remedial course, etc.).
- To start: submit the application with proof of insurance and an initial $25 payment applied to your fees.
- Ongoing: once approved, pay a minimum of $25 every 30 days (measured from your last payment) until the balance is gone.
- Service fee: each in-person deputy-registrar payment still adds the $10 service fee.
The payment plan addresses the fees; it does not substitute for clearing the underlying cause of the suspension.
Where and how to pay
| Method | Notes |
|---|---|
| In person at a BMV deputy registrar | Cash, check, money order, or credit card. $10 service fee per payment. Same-day. |
| Online | Credit card via the BMV’s reinstatement payment system. |
| By mail | Check or money order to the BMV; allow 7 to 10 days processing. |
Fees and figures change. Verify current amounts on bmv.ohio.gov before your visit.
Paying in person at a deputy registrar lets you confirm on the spot that the payment posted to the right suspension. Bring your reinstatement requirements letter so staff can apply funds correctly.
What causes return trips
- Treating one fee as the whole bill. Each suspension has its own fee; pay them all.
- Paying before the cause is cleared. Fees don’t lift a suspension with an open court, CSEA, or insurance condition. Route the cause first via license reinstatement.
- Overlooking amnesty or the payment plan. If older debt or affordability is the barrier, you may qualify for a reduction or a $25/month plan.
- Forgetting the $10 service fee budget for in-person payments.
- Ignoring the expired credential. Reinstatement and license renewal are separate; handle both.
Common questions
How much is the reinstatement fee for an OVI in Ohio? It depends on the conviction or setup date. The current Ohio BMV fee schedule lists $315.00 for ALS records added on or after April 9, 2025 and OVI / Physical Control suspensions with conviction dates on or after April 9, 2025. For older records, confirm the exact amount on your requirements letter or in the BMV payment portal.
How much is the no-insurance reinstatement fee? The current Ohio BMV schedule lists non-compliance fees at $40.00 for a first offense, $300.00 for a second offense within one year, and $600.00 for a third offense within one year.
Is there an extra fee to pay at the BMV? Yes, a $10 deputy registrar service fee is added each time you pay reinstatement fees in person.
Can I get my reinstatement fees reduced or waived? Possibly. The permanent amnesty program can reduce or waive eligible fee debt for certain suspensions, with full waivers for qualifying indigent applicants. Check eligibility on bmv.ohio.gov.
What if I can’t pay it all at once? If you owe at least $150 and have met your other requirements, you can apply for the payment plan: proof of insurance plus an initial $25, then at least $25 every 30 days.
Does paying the fee reinstate my license by itself? Only if every other requirement is already satisfied. Otherwise, clear the cause with the court, CSEA, or insurer first, see license reinstatement.
Where do I see exactly what I owe? Your reinstatement requirements letter (or driving record) from the Ohio BMV lists each suspension, its requirements, and its fee.
