Lost your wallet? Card stolen, damaged in the wash, or just worn out? You can replace a lost driver license in Ohio at a deputy registrar and walk out with interim documentation the same day. Ohio deputy registrars issue duplicate (replacement) driver licenses and state ID cards for all Ohio residents. This page covers what to bring, the cost, online options, and how the visit works.
Want a one-page checklist? Download DMVQ replacement license PDF or use the accessible replacement license checklist.
DMVQ is an independent informational resource and is not affiliated with the Ohio BMV or any government agency. Quick orientation: in Ohio, driver licenses and state IDs are issued by the BMV through deputy registrar offices. Vehicle titles are separate, handled by the County Clerk of Courts.
What a duplicate license is
A duplicate is a reissue of your existing, valid credential, same expiration date, same class, when the original is lost, stolen, destroyed, or damaged. It is not a renewal: you’re not extending the term, just replacing the card. (If your license is also near expiration, ask about renewing instead, which gives you a fresh term.)
A duplicate also lets you fix a card that no longer matches you. For example, if you’ve had a legal name change and need the card to reflect it, that’s processed as a name-change/duplicate transaction with the supporting document.
What to bring (checklist)
What you need depends on whether you can verify your identity easily and which card type you want. Bring originals or certified copies, as photocopies and laminated documents are not accepted.
The straightforward case
If your record is in good standing and you can confirm your identity:
- Any identification you still have (an expired license, passport, or other photo ID helps)
- Knowledge of your personal information (name, date of birth, address, SSN)
- Payment (see fees below)
If you want a Compliant (REAL ID) duplicate, or can’t readily prove identity
You’ll need the full REAL ID document set:
- One document proving full legal name, date of birth, and legal presence (U.S. passport or certified birth certificate)
- One document proving your Social Security number (Social Security card, W-2, or 1099)
- Two documents from different sources proving your Ohio street address
- Proof of any legal name change, if applicable
See the full what to bring to the BMV guide and REAL ID page. If your card was stolen, consider filing a police report. It’s not required for a duplicate, but it helps if the card is misused.
Step by step: getting a duplicate
- Gather what you have using the checklist above.
- Plan your visit to a deputy registrar. Use online queueing options to save time if available.
- Check in and let the clerk know you need a duplicate (replacement) license or ID, and whether you want standard or REAL ID.
- Verify your identity and information.
- Have a new photo taken (in-person duplicates get a fresh photo).
- Pay the duplicate fee.
- Leave with interim documentation. Your permanent card arrives by U.S. Mail, usually within about 10 business days. Carry the interim paperwork meanwhile.
Online vs. in-person
Ohio offers an online duplicate for eligible drivers through the BMV’s OHID-based portal. You generally cannot get a duplicate online if you want to switch to a REAL ID for the first time, if your record has a block or suspension, or if your information needs updating. An online duplicate reuses your prior photo and mails the card.
| Item | Online duplicate | In-person at a deputy registrar |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Eligible standard replacements | REAL ID, name changes, identity issues |
| New photo | No (reuses prior) | Yes |
| REAL ID first time | Not available | Available |
| Result | Card mailed | Interim doc at counter, card mailed |
See online vs. in-person to check your eligibility. When in doubt, visit in person, it’s the surest path.
Fees
From the Ohio BMV fee schedule (last updated 9/30/2025), including the deputy registrar service fee. Confirm current fees on bmv.ohio.gov.
| Transaction | Fee |
|---|---|
| Duplicate operator (driver) license | $29.00 |
| Duplicate state ID card | $12.00 |
| Duplicate commercial driver license (CDL) | $31.50 |
Fees and figures change. Verify current amounts on bmv.ohio.gov before your visit.
A duplicate keeps your existing expiration date. If you’d rather start a fresh term, see driver license renewal.
Hours & location
Find your nearest deputy registrar and confirm hours before you go. See hours, location & directions for more details.
What causes return trips
- Confusing a duplicate with a renewal. A duplicate keeps your old expiration date; it doesn’t extend the term.
- Expecting the card on the spot. It arrives by mail; carry the interim paperwork.
- Assuming a standard duplicate is REAL ID. If you want to switch to REAL ID, bring the full document set and do it in person.
- Photocopies. Identity documents must be originals or certified copies.
- Letting a blocked record stall you online. If you have a suspension or hold, resolve it first. See license reinstatement.
Common questions
How much does it cost to replace a lost Ohio driver license? A duplicate operator license is $29.00 and a duplicate state ID is $12.00. Confirm current fees on bmv.ohio.gov.
Can I replace my license online in Ohio? Eligible standard duplicates can be done online through the BMV’s OHID portal, which reuses your prior photo and mails the card. You can’t do it online for a first-time REAL ID, a name change, or a record with a block.
Do I get my new card the same day? You leave with interim documentation; the permanent card arrives by U.S. Mail, usually within about 10 business days.
My license was stolen, should I file a police report? It isn’t required for a duplicate, but a report is wise if you’re concerned about identity misuse. Bring whatever ID you still have to a deputy registrar.
Can I update my address or name when I replace my card? Yes, handle it in person and bring the supporting documents (two proofs of a new Ohio address, or a certified name-change document).
Does a duplicate change my expiration date? No. A duplicate reissues the same credential with the same expiration. To start a new term, renew instead.
